February, 2025 Documentary: Project Grizzly (1996)
It’s been a weird few weeks. Let’s watch something fun.
Inspired by a childhood experience in which his life was spared by a gigantic grizzly, inventor Troy Hurtubise sets off on a mission to build a suit capable of withstanding an encounter with the giant beasts. His goal is not to harm the grizzlies, but instead to study them up close in their own environment.
If this sounds vaguely familiar, you might be thinking of Grizzly Man, Werner Herzog’s 2005 documentary that chronicles grizzly bear fanatic Timothy Treadwell and his demise in the Alaskan wilderness. But what sets Project Grizzly apart is Hertubise’s infectious enthusiasm and band of loyal friends and family that help him build and test each iteration of his mammoth suits.
