The Endless Summer wrap-up
What a summer! We took a journey back to the 1960s and explored surf culture as director Bruce Brown traveled the world with surfers Michael Hynson and Robert August. We also had a great chat with Blake Kasemeier, a SoCal surf enthusiast who gives a modern take on the influence of The Endless Summer and The Endless Summer II. I’d also like to give a special welcome to those of you who are new to The WALT thanks to Blake’s Substack recommendation. Be sure to leave a comment and join in on the conversation!
As is the tradition at the end of every month, here is some supplemental that pairs perfectly with The Endless Summer…
We put together a 16 song playlist of classic surf songs mixed with contemporary tunes that evoke the feeling of catching a big wave. Listen on Apple Music or Spotify!
We talked about it with Blake, so be sure to check out this 90s follow-up to the 1966 classic. See what’s changed about surfing, surf culture, surf equipment, and the beaches surfed back in the 60s. Watch it for free on YouTube.
Step Into Liquid, directed by Bruce Brown’s son Dana Brown, is the honorary 2003 follow-up to The Endless Summer and The Endless Summer II. Watch it for free on Crackle or Kanopy (with a library card). It’s also available to Fubo subscribers.
If you loved Bruce’s atypical documentary narration, this film is a great way to get a better understanding of the man behind the camera. Watch it for free on Crackle or The Roku Channel. This is also available to Fubo subscribers.
Can’t get enough of Bruce Brown? Then you can’t miss his Academy Award nominated 1971 documentary about motorcycle racing culture. The film features and was produced by Steve McQueen! On Any Sunday also has a series of follow-ups, so if you like this one, definitely seek out the others. It’s available for free on Tubi or Kanopy (with a library card).
Enjoy all of this supplemental material and look out for September’s documentary pick TOMORROW! But don’t forget that The WALT doesn’t work without your participation. Tell us what YOU think about The Endless Summer and let us know if there are any other materials the subscribers would find interesting based on August’s documentary pick.
