The WALT substack serves as a central space for documentary enthusiasts to engage in discussions about a wide range of subjects, each explored through the lens of a documentary film dedicated to that topic.

HOW IT WORKS

It’s simple and free!

  • Once every month, I’ll send out a documentary that is widely available to stream online. If you’ve read this far, you must be at least a little interested in documentary films so watching one shouldn’t be a big ask.

  • In that email, there will be some questions to keep in mind while you’re watching the film.

  • You will also get an email to a discussion thread specific to the film. That’s your opportunity to weigh in, watch the discourse, and maybe learn something from the community that wasn’t included in the film.

BUT I WANT TO CONTRIBUTE

A paid subscriber gets some perks!

  • You have input on the next selected documentary.

    • If your choice is selected, you’re able to share with all subscribers why you chose the film.

  • Chances for supplementary content.

    • As part of the LEARN element of “Watch and Learn”, I’ll be sourcing additional content and information from the filmmakers, subjects, or experts on the subject.

  • Access to the back catalogue.

    • Posts older than 2 months are only available to paid subscribers.

WHO ARE YOU?

The WALT is a project started by me, Jon Richardson. After earning a BA in Film Studies at Temple University, I produced non-fiction television for over a decade in Los Angeles, CA. After moving to Portland, OR I joined the Portland Art Museum and PAM CUT (formerly the Northwest Film Center) where I programmed films and experiences at the Museum’s Whitsell Auditorium.
